I apologize if someone has already raised this point, but is there any evidence
to show that publishers charging authors just to publish price their journals
lower than similar journals in their fields? One might consider this practice
justifiable if the aim was to share the burden of supporting the publishing
enterprise between author and user (or library).

It should be noted that university presses have long maintained a practice oi
asking authors (preferably with resources provided by their universities) to
subsidize publication of monographs whose expected sales alone could not cover
the full costs of publication. But there is no standard charge for every
publication; the charge differs depending on the cost /sales parameters of the
monograph in question.
