Thank you to everyone for all these suggestions.  I'm still absorbing
them, but between this and other lists there has been a flurry of
resources. Hard to tell where they overlap or conflict, but sufficed
to say there is a good deal of data being gathered on this - even if
it sounds like the NCES is cutting back on its efforts.  In any case,
I'll try to compile these sources somewhere, hopefully with some
annotations.
