Thanks much Lisa.   We agree.  The UCLA Library is proud to announce
that it will sponsor two travel scholarships to OpenCon 2014:

We’re excited by the opportunity to enable students and early career
researchers to engage with issues of open access, open education, and
open data and to develop skills to take actions that support the
creation of a more open system for creating and sharing knowledge.
Compared to even our least expensive journal title, the price is
modest and the potential return immense.  Attending this conference
will lead to countless conversations by the student and early career
researcher we plan to send with their peers, creating effects that
ripple out through their communities to reach far more broadly that we
could by ourselves.

for a graduate student or early career researcher from your campus to
attend the OpenCon 2014 meeting in November in Washington, D.C.  This
is an exciting opportunity, initiated by the Right2Research Coalition
and SPARC, to bring together students and early career researchers
from across the world to learn about the issues, develop critical
skills, and return home ready to catalyze action toward a more open
system for sharing the world’s information — from scholarly and
scientific research, to educational materials, to digital data.

The institutions that sponsor a travel scholarship will have the
option to select one qualified student or early career researcher from
your institution to attend the meeting.  The travel scholarship
sponsorship is $1,500 — an amount less than some article processing
charges (APCs).  We have chosen to support a travel scholarship
because having an Emory student or early career researcher attend and
bring back their experience to share with others on our campus is
clearly aligned with the goals of our OA initiatives.
