Universities already bear the brunt of the publishing burden.  In the
current system our funds go to making a few corporations wealthier,
but I think if you surveyed librarians and administrators at most
academic institutions they would much rather see a more balanced
publishing system where journals cost their actual prices without
artificial price increases and see a more robust monograph market.

If the for-profit publishers decided to remove themselves from the
academic market the society publishers and university presses would
find themselves being called upon to take up those duties.  There are
a number of successful examples of university presses doing this
already.  The for-profits need academia MUCH more than we need them.
