I think that all of us would want to applaud the efforts of the
Elsevier Foundation and congratulation the recipients of their grants.
However, I do think the timing is unfortunate. While supporting
initiatives that have the '...potential for an immediate and enduring
impact on our health and science communities,' Elsevier are
simultaneously investing time and money on having PubMed Central shut
down, so denying free access to medical research not just to readers
in the US, but to those all over the globe - including those in the
developing world.
PubMed Central now contains 2.3 million freely accessible articles. I
would hope that if Elsevier, through its Foundation, is truly
concerned with 'innovation in improving access and use of scientific,
technical and medical information.' It will recognise the innovation
of PubMed Central and allow it to continue the good work it does
unmolested.
