For immediate release.

27th June 2013, Bethesda, MA and Beaverton, OR

ORCID using Ringgold as Registration Agency for ISNI Institutional
Identifiers.

ORCID has entered into an agreement with Ringgold Inc to provide its
database of institutional entities and associated unique institutional
identifiers, in the form of Ringgold IDs and the forthcoming ISNI numbers.
These unique organizational identifiers will be used to support the accurate
and persistent identification of researcher institutional affiliations in
the ORCID Registry.

ORCID, https://orcid.org, provides researchers with the ability to obtain a
unique ID which distinguishes a researcher from others and allows for
accurate attribution of research output. The new agreement with Ringgold has
numerous benefits to the research community:

- Researchers can accurately state their institutional affiliations and keep
them up to date

- Research organizations can reduce the time-consuming process of
maintaining up-to-date affiliation records and streamline access to
institutional resources for their staff

- Funders will be able to more easily track where the research they support
is carried out

- Publishers will be able to streamline the manuscript submission process
and provide vital information for the automation of Article Publication
Charges in open access journals.

Laure Haak, Executive Director of ORCID said: “ORCID’s mission is to support
the connection of research and researchers. Open research data exchange
standards are critical for system interoperability, and we are pleased to be
working with Ringgold to provide ISNI organizational identifiers in the
ORCID Registry.”

Laura Cox, Chief Marketing Officer of Ringgold said: “We are delighted to be
working with such an important industry organization as ORCID. By including
institutional identifiers in the ORCID Registry, there is a huge benefit to
all concerned in scholarly communications. This important development will
enable data mapping between different organizations and also the data held
in systems within those organizations.”

About Ringgold

Ringgold (www.ringgold.com) has created a process for the identification of
institutions and the relationships between organisations. Each institutional
entity has been assigned its own unique Ringgold ID, which is mapped to the
organisational hierarchy and a range of classification metadata. Ringgold
provides two main services:

- Identify, a database of over 360,000 organisations with Ringgold IDs and
associated metadata.

- CDO, a directory of over 400 library consortia world-wide which licence
online content.

Ringgold is also developing services to publishers to enhance the discovery
of scholarly books and e-books, called ProtoView, whereby it summarises the
content of books and provides them along with enhanced standard metadata
directly to a wide range of discovery channels, including a website for
librarians.
