A distinguished Georgetown colleague, Charles King, has just published
*Midnight at the Pera Palace*, a fine book about the making of modern
Istanbul, for a trade audience. Both the Apple and Kindle versions of
the book turn out to be unable to render Turkish names (that use
diacritical marks not found in Anglo-Franco-Germano-Italian
publishing) in a consistent font -- you glance down a screen and the
words with those marks jump out because the critical letter is the
wrong size or bolded or a different font. It's ugly and conveys an
undertone of cultural insensitivity (we can't be bothered to represent
these words carefully). There are many issues with quality of
e-books, but this one has the smell of simple cheapness: converting
the book to an e-format without care or attention and giving the
reader an ugly experience.
