All,

Please note that Ivy Plus includes the University of Chicago as well
as the other swell schools listed. Who could forget an institution
upon whom the Nobel gods have smiled so frequently? My unlimited
apologies to my friends on the South .Side.

Best,
Eliz Kirk

Subject: Ivy Plus Libraries seek a Director of Collections Initiatives

The Ivy Plus libraries (Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Cornell, Brown,
UPenn, Dartmouth, Princeton, Johns Hopkins, MIT, Duke, and Stanford)
are searching for a Director of Collections Initiatives. This promises
to be a fabulous position with the potential to bring to these
thirteen landmark institutions a new definition of “collective
collection”. The position will be based at Yale and will work
principally with the chief collections officers across the membership.

To quote from the position description:

"The Ivy Plus Libraries… comprising some of the greatest library
collections in the world, seek an experienced, enthusiastic, and
imaginative leader to plan, implement, and oversee new collaborative
collections initiatives which will further integrate the vast riches
of our collective collection while also expanding the breadth and
depth of resources available, in any format and for scholars of today
and tomorrow.

The Director of Collections Initiatives serves as the principal
planner, project manager, and negotiator for initiatives that promise
substantial positive impacts in the development, management, and use
of collections in any format. Although this senior-level position
reports to the Yale’s University Librarian, it is the Ivy Plus
Collection Development Group, especially its Executive Committee,
which will partner with and guide the Director of Collections
Initiatives to develop, implement, and assess efforts ranging from
shared print storage capability to digital preservation, drawing on
the unparalleled strengths of both the staff and the collections of
the Ivy Plus institutions.

The Director of Collections Initiatives assists or leads program
planning, project management, and coordination of key collaborative
initiatives. This full-time position, with an initial three-year
appointment, requires an experienced collections specialist who
understands the contemporary research collections landscape in all of
its complexity and whose leadership style is at once deft, decisive,
and diplomatic."

There is a high degree of excitement and enthusiasm in the Ivy Plus
libraries around our collaborative collecting and the Director of
Collections Initiatives will be a welcome addition to our joint work.
We would be very grateful if you would pass the description along to
those who you believe would make excellent candidates, or make
nominations. I’d be happy to discuss the position with anyone who
might like further information.

This is an opportunity to make a real mark professionally.
