Joe, a short list:

1.  Holding expanding, curating, and managing collections of print materials.

2.  Especially "special collections":  unique materials of cultural value,
           a.  some analog,
           b.  some digital -- with responsibility for preservation of both

3.  Brokering together readers and users of various kinds to discover
and use both open and closed access resources.

4.  Discovery and evaluation:  assisting users in finding the right
materials for their purposes and processing what they find,
           a.  especially materials for learners at every level.

5.  Publishing, that is to say, bringing worthy and generally unique
materials and new contributions to public attention in managed form
and securing preservation and access.

There are surely many more.
