The Electrochemical Society (ECS) is very pleased to announce the
launch of Author Choice Open Access across its four peer-reviewed
journals: Journal of The Electrochemical Society, ECS Journal of Solid
State Science and Technology, ECS Electrochemistry Letters, and ECS
Solid State Letters. As of today, authors who submit papers to one of
these publications will be given the choice of making it Open Access
(OA) if they wish.

Giving authors the choice of making their articles available as OA is
the first step for ECS toward enabling Open Access throughout their
four journals. ECS's long-term goal is to move away from the
subscriptions model entirely, to full Open Access. This is a move
toward disseminating the results of important scientific work more
widely, and thereby making the outputs of research accessible to
anyone with an Internet connection.

Mary Yess, Deputy Executive Director and Publisher of ECS, said: "We
are very excited about this progress. Our mission is to advance theory
and practice at the cutting edge of electrochemistry and solid-state
science and technology--and a key part of our work is to disseminate
knowledge and research in these areas as widely as we can. Author
Choice Open Access is the first step of an exciting project to make
this important science available to everyone. The research that ECS
publishes has a direct impact on the sustainability issues facing our
planet - energy supply, access to clean water, and good sanitation.
The more widely this research can be accessed, the greater the
likelihood of developments emerging that can make a difference in our
world."

About ECS and Open Access

ECS publications contain high impact research that becomes more and
more relevant every day--a recent evaluation of ECS technical
activities suggests that close to 65% of the published work involves
the sustainability of our planet.

Enabling Open Access (OA) to this research is imperative to ECS in its
mission to disseminate the best research in their technical fields as
widely as possible.

If an author wishes to publish an article as Open Access, the ECS
Article Processing Charge is USD $800 per accepted article (through
2014); or an Article Credit may be used in place of payment.

Subscribing institutions are given, as part of their subscriptions
package for 2014, unlimited Article Credits. ECS members will receive
one Article Credit per member for use in 2014.

ECS journals, quality standards, review and editorial processes will
otherwise continue exactly as they are now.

"We are excited to see a major professional society make such a bold
move toward open access," said Heather Joseph, Executive Director of
the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC).
"The Electrochemical Society's plans will benefit the research
community, universities, libraries, and the general public by making
critical scientific findings more widely and rapidly available. The
strategy ECS is pursuing is a critical development in the ongoing move
toward open access within scholarly publishing. It demonstrates that
professional societies can move boldly and decisively to increase the
availability of important research."
