Last week, a North American expert group released a brand new library
model license, developed as a team effort over the last year. The
participating organizations are CRL, CLIR, ARL, CDL, CRKN, and
NELLCO, with legal expertise provided by Lisa Macklin of Emory
University Libraries. (The logos on the release will tell you who all
the groups are!)

The document is detailed, while very much straightforward to read and
understand. It covers numerous new issues that have emerged since
the previous 2008 LIBLICENSE update. The Model License is expected to
support libraries' efforts to serve their users and achieve the core
mission of preserving intellectual heritage in the digital age by
negotiating the best terms of use.

The companion "create your own license" software will be released
early in 2015. We thank the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for its
support of this project.

Happy holidays!

Ann Okerson, for CRL and the Team
