Coordinator and Librarian, Humanities Collections
University of Pennsylvania Libraries

The University of Pennsylvania Libraries is looking for a creative,
enthusiastic librarian to serve as Coordinator and Librarian for its
Humanities Collections. The successful candidate will coordinate the
collection development and management activities in the subject
areas/departments designated as humanities at Penn. The Coordinator
works with the Assistant Director of Collection Development & Analysis
and, through participation on the Collection Development Council, with
the four other coordinators on collections-related planning and
policy. The position also assumes responsibility for subject liaison
responsibilities in multiple humanities subjects.

Responsibilities

Coordinates the collection development and management responsibilities
of other humanities subject specialists, including the determination
of their budgets, totaling more than $2.5M in support of Art and
Architecture, Cinema Studies, Classics, Comparative Literature,
English, French, German, History, Italian, Medieval Studies, Music,
Philosophy, Religious Studies, and Spanish.

Along with four other Collection Coordinators (Area Studies, Social
Sciences, Engineering & Physical Sciences, and Health Sciences), who
form the Collection Development Council, advises the Assistant
Director of Collection Development & Analysis about the scholarly
resource needs of Penn constituents.

Assumes responsibility for subject liaison responsibilities
(collection development and management, community outreach and
engagement, reference, and instruction) in multiple humanities
subjects, including potentially European History, Comparative
Literature, and literatures in English, French, German, and Italian.

Determines the optimal housing, location, and preservation triage for
relevant humanities collections and designates materials for transfer
to the High Density Library.

Monitors trends in publishing and digital scholarship in the
humanities to maximize and further develop the Libraries involvement
in strategic initiatives on campus and beyond.

In collaboration with the Libraries’ Office of Development & External
Affairs, creates effective stewardship relationships with donors.

Qualifications

Required

Master’s degree in library science and five years of experience—or the
equivalent combination of education, experience, training, and
practice.
Graduate degree in the humanities and proficiency in at least two
European languages, including French, German, or Italian.

Preferred

At least five years of experience in an academic or research institution

Demonstrated knowledge of scholarly research resources, disciplinary
issues, and publishing trends in the humanities

Evidence of innovative approaches to collection development,
management, and assessment

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively within a
collegial framework within and outside of the libraries

Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Strong analytical and decision-making skills

Demonstrable leadership and managerial skills
