ACS Publications announces Library Disaster Relief Initiative

ACS Publications would like to express its concern and support for the
organizations, libraries, and the research communities they serve in the
areas impacted by Hurricane Sandy.  While it is too soon to
authoritatively discern the impact of this storm on our customers and
their patrons, it is clear given the large-scale destruction to the
coastal communities of Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut,
that there is significant potential for longer-term disruption to library
information access and infrastructure.

At ACS we count ourselves fortunate that neither our facilities, our IT
infrastructure or services, nor our customer service or technical support
centers were affected by the storm.  Although our offices in Washington DC
were closed for Monday and Tuesday after the storm, our online services
and systems were not interrupted by the event.

Today everyone is rightly focused on the health and safety of the entire
population of the impacted areas.  However, ACS wishes to announce these
immediate provisions to ensure continued access for scientists and
students in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Delaware to research
materials published in the journals of the American Chemical Society.

1.      Print Journal Replacement Program

*  Any academic library in the disaster area that has suffered damage to
either print or microfilm copies of ACS journals and/or has restricted
access due to the storm on these materials, will receive complimentary
access to the electronic versions of those volumes for the remainder of
2012 ­ and for 2013.

2.      Inter-Campus Shared Services Program

* If an academic institution enters into a reciprocal relationship with
another to allow students from a disaster-damaged institution library
privileges, ACS will mirror the 2012-2013 ACS subscription rights of the
impacted institution to the shared service library at no additional charge.

* Any current ACS academic library customer in the disaster zone, looking
to support ³walk-in access² to community members, may apply to ACS for
immediate licensed access to ACS All Publications until January 1, 2013.

We are contacting our corporate and government library customers to better
understand their current requirements for alternative access provisions.
Similarly, if there are academic libraries in states contiguous to the
core mid-Atlantic rim that have significant disruption in their
capabilities, we will be happy to work with them on a case by case basis.

These programs may be modified or extended in the future based as
information regarding the extent of the damage and the needs our library
partners becomes more available.
