Modern Languages Open (MLO)

a groundbreaking new interdisciplinary platform for the modern
languages.

MLO is a peer-reviewed platform for the open access publication of
research from the modern languages to a global audience.
Focusing on interdisciplinarity across the modern languages and
engagement with other fields from a modern languages perspective, MLO
offers rigorous peer review pre-publication and post-publication
interactivity, rapid turnaround from submission to publication, Gold
Open Access under a CC-BY or CC-BY-NC licence, rewards for article
reviewers, flexibility on article length from 3,000-15,000 words, and
international dissemination under the imprimatur of a university
press.

Current sections are: Chinese/Asian languages; French and Francophone;
Hispanic Studies; German Studies; Portuguese and Lusophone; Russian
and Eastern European Languages; and Italian. However, MLO welcomes
submissions on all areas of Modern Languages.

The platform allows content to be downloaded, printed, cited, shared
through numerous social media sites and commented upon by registered
users.

Martin Wolf, Research Support Lead at the University of Liverpool's
Sydney Jones Library said, "MLO is a great example of collaboration
not competition between publishers and libraries on open access
issues, with the university's press and library working together to
create a new open access platform. Of particular note is the
innovative approach to publication - a move away from the print-bound
structures of volumes and issues to a more dynamic publishing
paradigm, allied to a shift from rigid page count limitations that
make no sense in the online publishing environment."

Anthony Cond, Managing Director of Liverpool University Press, said,
"Modern Languages Open links two of the most important recent trends
in the dissemination of modern languages research: it channels the
rise of open access to provide a sustainable future for
interdisciplinarity.  Whereas subscription based journals necessarily
sit in disciplinary silos for the most part, MLO will be a sustainable

research transcends traditional subject boundaries.  At the same time,
authors with more conventional papers can benefit from flexibility on
