From: Katie Fortney <[log in to unmask]> Date: Wed, 9 May 2012 11:44:15 -0500 We have a project on our campus, but it's been driven and managed by one of our researchers - who was working on it before he came here - with the library in an occasional support role. He's crawling for references to DNA sequences and incorporating them into our genome browser (http://genome.ucsc.edu/) so researchers viewing segments of the genome can more easily find articles about the segments they're interested in. I don't know if this will come as a surprise to many of you, but it never occurred to him to contact the library regarding his issues with publishers, at least not until very late in the process. We heard about what he was doing through an article in Nature and then we contacted him. The URL for the project, including tracking the progress of dealing with publishers, is: http://text.soe.ucsc.edu/ And here's the Nature piece about their experience with publishers: http://www.nature.com/news/trouble-at-the-text-mine-1.10184 Regards, Katie Katie Fortney Science & Engineering Librarian Scholarly Communication Officer [log in to unmask] UC Santa Cruz Library Santa Cruz, CA 95064 831.502.7505
