From: "Pasewaldt, Jessica" <[log in to unmask]> Date: Tue, 12 Jun 2012 17:50:39 +0000 Please join the ALCTS Access to Continuing Resources Interest Group for our program at ALA Annual in Anaheim: Opening Access for a New Era of Scholarly Publishing Access to Continuing Resources Interest Group Sunday, June 24, 4:00 – 5:30 pm HYATT-Grand Ballroom B Scholarly communication is going through enormous transformation due to the strong foothold of open access publishing and the desire of authors to retain more control over their copyrights and their works. Open access (OA) policies are becoming more widespread amongst academic and research institutions, enabling authors to deposit their articles in an open access repository. The University of Kansas (KU) was the first U.S. public university to adopt an OA policy for scholarly articles, and KU led the formation of the Coalition of Open Access Policy Institutions (COAPI). The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (SEP) was founded by scholars over fifteen years ago as an open access, continually-updated, authoritative online encyclopedia funded through grants and institutional members. And, responding to the demand for more open access options, many publishers have expanded their open access journal offerings. SAGE Open is one such journal, representing a broad-based open-access option for the social & behavioral sciences and the humanities. Speakers: Ada Emmett, Scholarly Communications Program Head, University of Kansas Libraries, will speak about KU’s open access policy; Julie Bobay, Associate Dean for Collection Development & Scholarly Communication at Indiana University will speak about the publishing model of the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy; and Jim Gilden, Editor of SAGE Open, will talk about this new open access journal.
