HelpMePublish is designed to introduce researchers to a wider array of journals in their area and to emphasise the many different attributes of journals that will suit particular academics and particular projects. It is an app for mobile devices that provides databases on major subject areas containing information on more than 6000 reputable academic journals provided by journal editors, subject experts and academic users. In the medium term, the project aims to cover most academic subject areas and hence to grow considerably the number of journals listed. Journals are surveyed annually and asked for their acceptance rates, refereeing policies, open access policies and publication charges. The other major aspect of the app is that it surveys verified (based on email address) academic users about a variety of aspects of their publication experiences, including editorial feedback, journal efficiency, ease of communication. As part of this crowdsourcing, HelpMePublish suggests a new perspective (the Recommendation Index) on journal quality which may make academics aware of (and submit work to) newer, smaller journals with strong editorial teams working in niche areas. Current measures of journal quality don’t tell enough about how many people are likely to read your work if you publish in a particular journal. HelpMePublish polls academic users about the number of articles from a particular journal that they have recommended to colleagues and students over the past year.
