In my field, if you directly quote from a source, you have to give the page number(s) on which the quotation appeared. So page numbers other than the first and last are indeed important. But the answer is simple. When we site an article, its first and last page suffice. No one cites the intermediate pages in the article (as it is usually done in the book).
