Joe Esposito ***** ASLO, the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (“ASLO” or “Society”), is seeking an Executive Director who will be responsible for the oversight of the Society’s operations, with a focus on the management and development of the society’s publications portfolio. The ED serves and promotes the interests of the members of the society guided by directives of the Board of Directors and as such initiates, oversees, coordinates and organizes efforts to realize the mission of society. ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND: For more than 50 years, ASLO has been a leading professional organization for researchers and educators in the field of aquatic science, working to provide for their needs at all phases of professional development. The purpose of ASLO is to foster a diverse, international scientific community that creates, integrates and communicates knowledge across the full spectrum of aquatic sciences, advances public awareness and education about aquatic resources and research, and promotes scientific stewardship of aquatic resources for the public interest. Its products and activities are directed toward these ends. ASLO is incorporated as a nonstock (non-profit) corporation in the State of Wisconsin. Membership in the society is presently more than 3,800 members. Members are drawn from 58 countries including the United States, and more than a quarter of the members reside outside the U.S. In 2011, ASLO members voted to change its name to the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography, reflecting the increasingly international nature of the society. ASLO’s annual budget is approximately $1.5 million. ASLO is best known for its highly rated research journals, its interdisciplinary meetings and its special symposia. The society supports increasingly important programs in public education and outreach and public policy. It strives to encourage student participation and to increase opportunities for minorities in the aquatic sciences. The ED’s primary duties and responsibilities include: • Provide liaison and support between members, contractors and outside interests to the Board of Directors and Advisory Board. Report to the Board on a regular basis regarding on-going assessment of services to ASLO’s members, clients and stakeholders, of new opportunities, and of emerging challenges. • Establish and foster a smoothly functioning, efficient organization through effective communication and building of relationships inside and outside the society. • Guide and consistently strive to improve the services provided to members, authors, and • Participate in strategic planning for the society along with the Board. Update the Board as to progress toward goals set by the strategic plan. General Management and External Relations • Oversee all operations of the society including the relationships with contractors and individuals responsible for ASLO’s publications and products, meeting planning and • Oversee the business operations of the society, monitor financial results and address variances, oversee formation of the annual budget. • Oversee the reporting of financial and operational results to Board. • Create or review business plans for new products. • Conduct annual reviews of existing products. • Ensure the attainment of ASLO’s objectives by intensively supporting the selection, development, management and evaluation of staff and service providers. • Specify accountabilities and goals; regularly evaluate performance. • Evaluate contracts with all third parties and recommend changes to Board, and implement changes approved by Board. • Maintain a high level of awareness of initiatives and factors that affect the society. (e.g. changes in OA policies, launch of competitive products). • Promote and market the society. • Develop long-term financial and marketing strategies to ensure the sustainability and growth of ASLO’s publication portfolio. • Assess ASLO’s existing journal and book products. • Develop and launch new journal and book projects. • Review the current business and pricing models for the Society’s publications • Optimize sales (print, on-line, consortia), sourcing advertising agents, and sourcing • Analyze and recommend changes to ASLO’s editorial office (budgeting and • Assess manuscript processing systems, carrying out workflow analysis and optimizing of editorial office procedures. • Analyze and recommend on-line journal hosting services. • Analyze and recommend sourcing or partnering with publishers. • Optimize editorial office staffing, recruiting staff and editorial team. • Consolidate web presence, increasing visibility and accessibility of ASLO’s products • Develop multimedia, delivery of material to mobile devices and social media. • Seek outside funding in support of the society. • Provide support to the Board in its fund development efforts. PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS Competitive candidates will be innovative leaders with 10+ years of experience in roles analogous to this one. Senior level management experience in a scientific publishing organization or an organization with a significant scientific publishing program is required. Experience in the functioning of non-profit scholarly societies is a plus. Required experience and qualifications include: • Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Management, Science or related- scientific information management; graduate degree preferred. • Strong background in the scholarly publishing industry, including scientific journal management, marketing and sales, editorial and production, and revenue models. • Ability to support the leadership of a complex nonprofit organization including an understanding of the responsibilities and constraints of such an organization. • Experience reporting to, working closely with, or serving on a Board of Directors. • Proven analytical skills with ability to evaluate needs and develop and implement effective solutions independently.
