I would agree with you that this is a significant weakness of this
"study" by Science.

Maybe Science will repeat this study on relevant journals irrespective
of whether they are free or open?

It puzzles me that the 'study' didn't send the paper to non-OA
journals as well.  I would not be at all surprised if it had been
accepted by a good few...
