Speakers: Karen Hawkins, Senior Director, IEEE and Saurabh Sinha, Executive Dean, University of Johannesburg Overview: South Africa is the most advanced, broad‐based and productive economy in Africa, accounting for 31% of Sub‐Saharan Africa's GDP in 2010. The United States plays a prominent role in the South African economy and is the third largest trading partner behind China and Germany. South Africa has one of the highest rates of public investment in education in the world. At about 7% of gross domestic product (GDP) and 20% of total state expenditure, the government spends more on education than any other sector. These factors and more have made South Africa of great interest to publishers both as an emerging audience for scholarly content and a source of authors. Beginning in 2009, IEEE, the world’s largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and publisher of nearly a third of the world’s technical literature in electrical engineering, computer science, and electronics, was able to partner with local volunteers to establish a successful university library consortium that continues to grow. Join us to learn more about the economic, demographic and cultural conditions in South Africa, and how scholarly publishers and societies can partner with local editorial and volunteer resources to find and serve new audiences in this dynamic market. Who should attend: Heads of house, publishers, editors, marketing and sales managers, and all others interested in participating in a conversation about critical topics in developing markets.
