From: "Hersh, Gemma (ELS-CAM)" <[log in to unmask]> Date: Mon, 14 Jul 2014 15:10:59 +0000 Dear Colleagues - Members of liblicense may also be interested in our response to LIBER (and other organisations’) open letter re: text and data mining. In this letter we set out how our policy has evolved since 2006, in response to researcher feedback, and how it is designed to provide researchers with practical, workable TDM services now, no matter the legal framework of the country in which they are based. In particular the letter explains: • That our click through agreement is not intended to place additional liability on the researcher • How API registration process works and how it has evolved in response to researcher feedback • That we facilitate the mining of images and other third party content but are ourselves bound by legal obligations to respect third-party copyright and often do not hold reuse rights to the images we license • That we have altered our licensing of outputs, in response to researcher feedback • That we support transparency and reproducibility of results A copy of the letter can be viewed in full here: http://www.elsevier.com/__data/assets/pdf_file/0004/208948/TDM_openletter.pdf/_nocache Please don’t hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Gemma Hersh Director of Policy Elsevier -----Original Message----- ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Susan Reilly <[log in to unmask]> Date: Wed, Jul 9, 2014 at 5:46 PM As announced at the LIBER Conference in Riga, LIBER, the Association of European Research Libraries, along with 17 other International library and research organisations, have issued an open letter to Elsevier. The letter requests that Elsevier withdraw its TDM policy because it places unfair restrictions on how researchers can mine content to which they have legal access to and how they disseminate the results of their research. The letter is available here: http://libereurope.eu/news/european-research-organisations-call-on-elsevier-to-withdraw-tdm-policy/ It is open to further signatories, so please disseminate amongst your networks! Individuals or organisations wishing to sign the letter should forward their details and logo on to me: [log in to unmask] Kind regards, Susan Reilly Advocacy & Projects Manager LIBER
