*January 6, 2017, Annapolis, MD* – The National Federation of Advanced

selected to receive the NFAIS 2017 Miles Conrad Award
<https://nfais.memberclicks.net/miles-conrad-lectures>.

NFAIS’s Miles Conrad Award, long considered the information community’s
premier annual honor for achievement in fostering the growth of information
services, is being given to Russell in recognition of her significant
achievements in librarianship and for her leadership in information
services throughout a career spanning academia, government, the non-profit
and private sectors.

Prior to her current position at the University of Florida, Russell was the
Managing Director, Information Dissemination and Superintendent of
Documents at the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO), now the Government
Publishing Office, from 2003-2007.

She served as Deputy Director of the U.S. National Commission on Libraries
and Information Science (NCLIS) from 1998-2003 and as director of the
Office of Electronic Information Dissemination Services and the Federal
Depository Library Program at GPO from 1991-1997.

Russell also worked for over ten years in the information industry, doing
marketing and product development as well as serving as a
government-industry liaison. Her corporate experience includes Information
Handling Services (IHS) and its parent company, the Information Technology
Group; Disclosure Information Group; Lexis-Nexis (then Mead Data Central),
and IDD Digital Alliances, a subsidiary of Investment Dealers Digest. She
also worked for over 10 years in special libraries.

Russell currently serves as a member of the board of LLMC-Digital. She
also is a former board member and president of NFAIS. She is a former board
member and past president of the Association of Southeastern Research
Libraries (ASERL) and a former board member of the Association of Research
Libraries (ARL). She is active in the American Library Association (ALA)
and the Association for College and Research Libraries (ACRL). Russell
holds a Master of Science in Library Science (MSLS) from The Catholic
University of America in Washington, D.C.

“It is a tremendous privilege, on behalf of the NFAIS community, to honor
Judy Russell with the NFAIS 2017 Miles Conrad Award,” said Marcie Granahan,
NFAIS Executive Director. “Judy’s extraordinary career and dedication to
helping lead information services firmly into the future are illustrative
of her expertise and character. She has also given, through the years past,
so much of her time, talent and great degree of collegiality to helping
NFAIS grow and fully serve its dynamic membership.”

“I am deeply honored to have been chosen to receive this award. NFAIS has
played an important role in my career working in special libraries,
government, the information industry, and most recently in an academic
research library. Being able to work with colleaques in so many different
types of information service organizations has been immensely valuable. We
each bring different experiences, perspectives and knowledge to NFAIS, and
our interactions enrich us all through the people we meet, and the
experiences and ideas share,” said Russell.

Russell will be honored at the NFAIS 2017 Annual Conference

February 26-28, in Alexandria, VA, and will deliver the annual Miles Conrad
Memorial Lecture at the conference. Nominations for the Miles Conrad Award
are submitted by the NFAIS membership, and awardees are selected by
majority vote of the Board of Directors.

The NFAIS Miles Conrad Award and Memorial Lecture are named in honor of G.
Miles Conrad (1911-1964), co-founder of NFAIS. Conrad, who was the former
president of BIOSIS, had an early grasp of the potential of computer
technology when applied to the creation, organization and dissemination of
research information. The NFAIS Miles Conrad Lecturers each year are
industry leaders, innovators and opinion-makers representing the full
breadth of the information services community.

Recent recipients of the Miles Conrad Award include Deanna Marcum, former
Managing Director, Ithaka S+R; Tim Collins, President & CEO of EBSCO
Industries; Marjorie M.K. Hlava, President, Access Innovations, Inc.;
Robert N. Snyder, Chairman, Cambridge Information Group; Dame Lynne
Brindley, Chief Executive, The British Library; and Donald A.B. Lindberg,
National Library of Medicine.
