[With apologies for cross-posting]

Hi all,

Last week, eLife announced that we’ve joined a consortium of organisations committed to supporting Substance, a JavaScript library of tools for web-based content editing.

Substance is an open-source project which first started in 2010. It provides the building blocks for realising custom text editors and web-based publishing systems that are critical in establishing an open-source ecosystem for knowledge creation and dissemination.

Giuliano Maciocci, eLife’s Head of Product, says: "As a member of the Substance Consortium, we look forward to supporting the creation of valuable new tools and influencing current practices in the authoring, editing and production workflows for document-centred publishing."

Also, for anyone who missed it, we recently announced the launch of ScienceFair – a new open-source desktop app with eLife Lens that helps research and discovery continue offline.

eLife Lens uses the online environment to present research in a way that makes it easier to read and understand article text, figures and data. To address the demand for an offline version of Lens, eLife worked with Richard Smith-Unna, Cambridge University alum and former Mozilla Fellow for Science, to develop ScienceFairRichard explains more about the app in his blog post: https://elifesciences.org/labs/88b45406/sciencefair-a-new-desktop-science-library

For more information about ScienceFair or eLife joining the Substance Consortium, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Best wishes,

Emily
