Copyright Without Tears:

Lessons for Beginners and Everyone Else

Sunday, October 22, 2017

3:00 - 6:00 pm

Copyright is a topic that gets hotter as the pace-of-change in media accelerates. At next month's National Media Market in Portland, OR, our opening Copyright Without Tears workshop will deliver up-to-date insights on pressing issues ranging from the TEACH Act to the rights quandaries posed by direct-to-consumer streaming content.

The pre-conference copyright session Oct. 22 kicks off five days of intensive film screenings, exhibitor meetings and networking opportunities, and it's one of six professional development sessions at the conference.   All sessions and workshops are included in NMM registration - there is no additional workshop fee!.

Our copyright session superstars are:

Kyle Courtney, Copyright Advisor for the Office of Scholarly Communication at Harvard Library, founder of Fair Use Week and 2015 Library Journal National Academic Library Mover & Shaker

Will Cross, director of the Copyright & Digital Scholarship Center at NC State Libraries, author of the 2016 article "More than a House of Cards: Developing a Firm Foundation for Streaming Media and Consumer-Licensed Content in the Library"

Tucker Taylor, Head of Circulation, University of South Carolina Libraries, and co-founder of Journal of Copyright in Education & Librarianship

Winifred Metz, Head of the Media Resources Center at UNC-Chapel Hill, will moderate.

Designed to be dynamic and interactive, this Sunday-afternoon workshop will allow plenty of time for discussion and questions.
Our other content-rich presentations and panels range from a keynote on the history and traditions of media librarianship to a fun look at how the Portland libraries have created a digital collection about local craft beer.

Complete session descriptions and the conference schedule are online.  Registration is $260 for the entire conference, and includes an awards gala and theatrical screening event, three lunches and lots more.   And we're still offering a 10% discount for first time attendees.  Our hotel block is filling up fast -- we urge you to register now.

National Media Market is where professional relationships that last a lifetime get started.  This year's market promises to be the biggest and best in our 39-year history.
