SPARC reports in their recent Big Deal Cancellation Tracking
<https://sparcopen.org/our-work/big-deal-cancellation-tracking/> resource
that between 2015 and 2017, 21 institutions cancelled such agreements.
Others appear to be preparing to take similar actions in 2018. With these
major changes, will the "Big Deal" survive or is it time for new solutions
and new best practices?

This workshop aims to explore the issues and initiate conversations that
have the potential to create viable alternatives to what's currently in
place. NFAIS intends to be the safe haven for such dialogues to continue
past this event. The intent is for all stakeholders to contribute to the
creation of a mutual set of principles for long-term outcomes that meet the
needs of both libraries and publishers.

Our experienced colleagues will address both library needs and evaluation
efforts, as well as creative solutions publishers are working on as they
keep pace with technological advancements. During the workshop, case
studies and analyses from all stakeholders will contribute to our
understanding of the constant shifting of a shared landscape.

Attendees will hear administrators, faculty, and librarians from
institutions around the country including: Southern Illinois University
Carbondale; University of Arizona; University of Oklahoma; University of
Oregon; and West Virginia University. John Wiley and Sons and Elsevier will
also round out the discussion, adding a broader perspective of all
stakeholders in creating solutions.

At the close of the workshop attendees will have:

   - explored opportunities for libraries to be involved in the
   decision-making process for subscription packaging;
   - gained a greater understanding of library needs from a "customer"
   perspective; and
   - examined creative solutions that will create a better mutual
understanding and path toward sustainable solutions.
