Hello, Colleagues,

If you’re headed to ALA this week, please consider including this ALCTS Scholarly Communications Interest Group program in your schedule. The ALCTS Scholarly Communications Interest Group Chair, Michael Priehs (Wayne State University) and Vice-Chair, Sarah Beaubien (Grand Valley State University) are delighted to bring you a panel of distinguished speakers who will share how they’ve integrated open access content into their collection development practices

Curating Open Access Content with Collection Development Practices

Saturday, June 23, 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Location: Morial Convention Center, Rm 298

How does your library approach collecting open access content? Do you include open access journals in your holdings? Do you select and catalogue open access monographs, textbooks, or archival content alongside commercial collections? Do you have a collection development policy for open access content? Are you looking for ways to maximize your financial resources and continue building rich collections?

With its roots in collection development, the open access movement has grown and evolved to encompass advocacy and support for open access journals, monographs, open educational resources, library publishing, and more. It has also developed its own communities of practice and, to some degree, has evolved alongside, but separately from collection development and management practices over the past 20 or so years. While advocacy and scholarly communications services and programs are crucial elements of the open access movement, we assert that libraries can lend even more support to this movement and our students and researchers by melding collection management approaches with curating open access content.

Our panelists will describe how they approach the inclusion of open access content into their collections, including examples of collection policy, procedure, and how they involve campus partners and stakeholders in finding, adding, and promoting the use of open access content.

Panelists:

  • Coby Condrey, Collection Development Liaison Librarian, University of North Texas
  • Melanie Kowalski, Copyright & Scholarly Communications Librarian, Emory University
  • Chris Palazzolo, Head of Collection Management & Social Sciences Librarian, Emory University
