On journals, rather than books - INASP have various resources to help researchers and authors.  e.g. Helping researchers distinguish credible journals http://blog.inasp.info/helping-researchers-distinguish-credible-journals/ written by Siân Harris, their Communications Specialist.  Look around their website for more things of interest.

All journals at http://www.journaltocs.ac.uk/index.php have been through a selection process to check for quality.  There are now more OA journals in JournalTOCs than DOAJ (13,550 v 11,843), plus JournalTOCs includes hybrid (11,850 journals) and subscription journals.  A grand total of 31,500 journals from 3135 publishers.

It would be helpful if this useful advice could be expanded with tips how to avoid predatory "book" publishers who target fresh graduates with offers to publish their thesis.  I wonder how they monitor this market - they seem to be quite efficient, judging from the examples in this country where I have been able to advise (or not).  Unfortunately there seems to be no thumbs-up list like DOAJ for this sector - or is there? Would be helpful to know.

I can only encourage everyone on this list to direct researchers, especially those at the beginning of their careers, to www.thinkchecksubmit.org – an initiative sponsored by publishers, libraries and other professional organizations which seeks to give researchers seeking a journal for their published researcher a few simple tips on how to recognize a predatory or fake journal.

Best regards,

Eric
