Information Power Expands

Originally founded in 1985 Information Power is now expanding to best serve its funder, information vendor, library, publisher, society, and university clients. From January 2019 two new leaders step forward to drive the consultancy business forward:  Lorraine Estelle and Alicia Wise. Together the Information Power team has a strategic overview of the rapidly changing information landscape, and the important trends and opportunities this change brings, coupled with decades of combined management experience.

Helen Henderson, Founder, and Hazel Woodward welcomed this new phase for the business.  “Lorraine and Alicia are well-known in the content and information services space.  They are both accomplished and collaborative professionals, and great communicators able to work effectively across the full spectrum of stakeholders.  Their leadership of Information Power will position us to offer thoughtful strategic advice on some of the thorniest challenges of our times, for example the transition to Open Access.”

Together the Information Power team work with the full spectrum of stakeholders to advance learning, research, and scholarly communication. Team members are curating the 2019 Research & Scholarly Publishing Forum at London Book Fair, for example. In recent years they undertook a Feasibility Study on Monographs, delivered projects on e-book licensing and the total cost of ownership of journal collections by university libraries, analysed the usage of institutional repositories and developed a normalised usage report, contributed to the development of Distributed Usage Logging, worked with STM publishers to develop and deploy innovative business models for consortium purchasing, and delivered the workshop and community consultation for the report Open Access Fees and the Hybrid Journal.

Lorraine Estelle has experience in the development of new business models, collaborative library services, and information standards. As CEO of Jisc Collections, she has orchestrated UK library support for a range of transformative open access initiatives and agreements. She developed the first models to demonstrate the total cost of publication including APC costs for UK academic institutions and led the first national negotiations to successfully agree offset models to alleviate the cost faced by higher education institutions in maintaining subscriptions to hybrid journals while also paying APC charges. She also directed several research projects and the development of national shared services. Through her continuing role in COUNTER she is experienced with working collaboratively with different types of publishers, societies and their professional associations and libraries in reaching consensus. Lorraine is also co-editor of the open access journal: Insights: the UKSG journal and is a Main Committee member of UKSG.

Alicia Wise is an effective and experienced game changer working at the intersection of copyright, digital technologies, policy, and people. Alicia is known for her work as a communicator, influencer, and relationship builder and as someone who can drive organisational development and transformational change. She has more than 30 years’ experience in the academic information space including roles with libraries, publishers, and researchers. Most recently she was with Elsevier where she led on Open Access and global strategic relations. Prior to this she held roles with the Publishers Association, Publishers Licensing Society, Jisc, Archaeology Data Service, and in universities. She has served on the boards of Access to Research, Accessible Books Consortium, CHORUS, CLOCKSS, Digital Preservation Coalition, and Research4Life.
