Let me disagree.

IF an author pays for his forthcoming article in advance, the journal
benefits directly - this payment is like an insurance, which quashes the
uncertainty, as the article might not be in demand and thus could not be
easily sold otherwise than via a controversial and unpopular bundle
subscription.
