Apologies for throwing this out to the entire list but I've googled and googled and am still not sure how to proceed, so am turning to the experts for help.
One of our student groups is preparing to hold its annual fundraising gala and the theme of the event is "Rise Up". For obvious reasons the event is strictly digital this year, so the students are preparing a video presentation to be shown via Zoom (or something similar) to attendees. They want to include Andra Day's music video, "
Rise Up", in the event's live stream. They also want to archive the presentation on some public platform: YouTube, Facebook, or perhaps even our university website.
I presume we need to secure public performance rights for the live stream, but have loads of questions:
- Where can I go to secure such rights? I found the song on ASCAP's site but for the life of me can't figure out how to get hold of a human to inquire about rights.
- Do I need to secure separate rights for the song and the video (directed by M. Night Shyamalan)?
- Would public performance rights allow us to archive the video on a public platform such as YouTube or Facebook?
- If the answer to #3 is "no", could we delete the video from our students' presentation and replace it with a link to the original YouTube video?
What other questions should I be asking? TIA for any advice. This is obviously a new area for me.
