Hello,
I would be interested in the answer to this question as well, as I've
been looking into this history for the U.S., with regard to book
publishing. A few useful resources that I've found so far:
Chester Kerr, A Report on American University Presses (AAUP, 1949)
Gene R. Hawes, To Advance Knowledge: a Handbook on American University
Press Publishing (AAUP, 1967)
There are also at least a few solid-looking histories of the Oxford
University Press out there (possibly Cambridge as well), which were
shelved near the ones above in my library's stacks.
Best,
Elisabeth
