Todd Carpenter has a very good post on the Scholarly Kitchen today on
altmetrics:

http://scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2012/11/14/altmetrics-replacing-the-impact-factor-is-not-the-only-point/

I heard the argument of this post "live" at Charleston last week. Todd
makes a compelling case for the need for new metrics. I am now persuaded
that new metrics will in time change what is measured and that the result
will be an outpouring of scholarly material in new forms.
