From what I have heard, and I know the guy who drafted this (he used
to work at Mendeley), the request for information is get the same kind
of information from social networks as libraries already provide via
COUNTER.  So nothing personally identifiable and seems reasonable that
a publisher would want to know how things they publish are doing
online, much in the same way a website might want to know about their
visitors.

I do agree that recognition of the role of social networks in
scholarly communications comes more than a few years late, but it has
come, so my plan is to engage with those willing to engage and to take
this opportunity to say things they might not be receptive to hearing
at another time.
