*Preserving the Scholarly Record: Special Digitization Projects at Penn,
Princeton, Gorgias Press, and De Gruyter*

*Join us on Zoom on Wednesday, February 28, 1PM EST
<https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMudOqsrTMsG9LxW0uYGmccuyUFTMBPBewx#/registration>*

The Library of Alexandria was a great idea at the time. But how did that
work out? It’s a story, a cautionary tale like so many others that has
sadly been repeated for time immemorial. Digital technology has provided
new opportunities not just to renew and expand access to information, but
also to preserve the scholarly record. Join us to learn about the
digitization of important at-risk content, content that has long been
unavailable or at least not easily accessible, by four scholarly publishers:

   - University of Pennsylvania Press: American Philosophical Society
   - Princeton University Press: A.W. Mellon Lectures in the Fine Arts
   - Gorgias Press: The Private Collection of George Kiraz in Syriac and
   Eastern Christianity
   - De Gruyter: Akademie Verlag, the largest East German (GDR) scholarly
   publisher

Even with digital technology, too often the song remains the same – as
highlighted recently in a very impressive study by Martin Eve at Crossref .
Regarding the report, William Kilbride of the Digital Preservation
Coalition commented, “We’ve been arguing for years for urgent investment to
ensure research remains viable against the fluctuating fortunes of the
publishing industry.”

Please join us to hear an impressive panel discuss their uncommon
digitization projects (and comment on ‘the fluctuating fortunes of the
publishing industry’)!
