There hasn’t been a ton of reporting on this, but I’ve seen some scattered evidence of protestors (I don’t know for which side) occupying and damaging libraries on university campuses. I saw photos of the inside of the library at Portland State that showed what looked like pretty extensive damage and vandalism, and I’ve seen video footage of students blocking other students from entering the library at UCLA. I’d be very interested to know how widespread this has been – it seems like something we should be talking about.

I’m curious about that too, Rick. To my knowledge, as of this writing, there’s been no occupation of or damage to the library or any campus buildings on the Denver Auraria Campus (serving Metropolitan State University, Community College of Denver, and University of Colorado Denver). There have been protests on our campus for over a week now.

I am interested in a subsidiary question. Does anyone know of any colleges where teach-ins have been initiated. That word harks back to the era of Vietnam War protests in the late 1960s and early 1970s when concerned faculty and students would assemble at some location on campus, usually a large lecture hall, to discuss the war and its ramifications. It became a supplement to the regular academic curriculum and was purely voluntary. No attendance was taken, nor were grades given; it was just a free-flowing discussion, usually

The concept of the teach-in was born <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teach-in> at the University of Michigan and the tradition has continued during the Gaza encampments on campus. Organized activities have been planned many days including teach-ins, art projects, performances by musicians and poets, Shabbat services and dinner, Islamic prayers, activist training, etc.

Dear members,
I got into a curious situation. I recently published a paper in a journal, run by one of the universities in NY State, that failed to provide DOI for my paper.
The editors were advised to submit the metadata for the paper to Crossref and contacted the university librarians but the latter could not help, being unaware of Crossref.
From: Amy Schuler <[log in to unmask]> Date: Wed, 24 Apr 2024 09:13:20 -0400
This is surprising to me, however, are you sure the librarians are actually "unaware of Crossref", or are they instead unaware of the proper procedure or workflow for submitting metadata directly to Crossref? There is a difference. Off the top of my head, I do not know how to submit metadata directly to Crossref, since the (data) repository I use is already tied into DataCite and mints DOIs for us.

The front of house librarians and the back of house librarians tend to have different skill sets and knowledge, or skill sets based on what their job role is. I find it hard to believe that all the librarians were unaware of Crossref. I find it easy to believe that the librarian liaised to the editor's college at that university has a PhD or masters or other background in that college's field, and less of a publishing background.

The university may not be a member of Crossref, so submitting information at that level may not be common for them. However, that doesn't mean they do not understand DOI or Crossref generally.

UKRI, in partnership with the Association of Learned Society Publishers (ALPSP), the British Academy, and the Open Access Scholarly Publishing Association (OASPA), has commissioned a project from Information Power. The project is to support book publishers in their transition to sustainable open access models, with a particular focus on learned society, subject association, and smaller specialist publishers. The Knowledge Unlatched books are available in the OAPEN library - see information here including the ability to search the collection at the bottom of the page https://www.oapen.org/topic/3870465-knowledge-unlatched
Browsing by collection ‘Knowledge Unlatched’ is here - https://library.oapen.org/browse?type=collection&value=Knowledge+Unlatched+(KU)
The entire OAPEN collection is available for ingestion into library catalogues (and many libraries across the world have ingested the collection) - information about this is here https://www.oapen.org/resources/15635975-metadata

Knowledge Unlatched hosts its content with HathiTrust, OAPEN, and Open Research Library.
Previously, we just turned on the collection in OCLC Worldshare so records were automatically loaded and added. We do not need to do that anymore as OhioLINK is bringing in the records for the entire consortia. We also have turned on in EDS (and previously Summon). It has been very little effort and maintenance to expose the content to our users.

Hi Jim,
I am not familiar with the way it might interact with the databases and metadata collections you are talking about, but probably the best place to find the KU collection is in the OAPEN site that collects all their releases.
Unfortunately it doesn't seem that you can filter by collection in the "Advanced Search" function so that is not helpful for the kind of discovery you are talking about. But maybe there is a different trick that can be used with the export of the data
From: "Jim O'Donnell" <[log in to unmask]> Date: Sun, 14 Apr 2024 15:01:34 -0700
With thanks to several, esp. Ronald Snijder of OAPEN. Here's what I have learned.
1. Once in the OAPEN/DOAB database, you can filter by "Collection" or "Grantor" and see KU items (over 4,000 so far). I do not yet see a way to filter and sort by subject area, but it may be there and my efforts have simply failed. How the average user would know to execute such an OAPEN search, I cannot tell.

Earlier this year, we noticed that some academic publishers have revised the copyright notices on their websites to state they reserve rights to text and data mining (TDM) and AI training (for example, see the website footers for Elsevier <https://www.elsevier.com/> and Wiley <https://www.wiley.com/en-us>). This new language may create confusion among libraries and researchers as TDM and AI-based analysis become an increasingly important aspect of research.

SO well said, Jim. What a spectacular note, thank you.
Some positive steps for the 'civilizational strategy' you propose might include
- publicly-funded repositories for born-digital works written (and curated) by human beings, for permanent purchase by libraries - clearly codified terms for the purchase (and reversion!) of rights for publishers, distributors and rights holders, so people understand what they're signing - a rock-solid means of ensuring that current library rights (including the right of first sale) are preserved for digital works

Dear Jim, you tackled the core of the problem. While we are discussing narrow terms of licenses, we drifted away from the principle of owning a copy for cultural preservation and that this exact copy will enter the public domain. In the growing world of born-digital, libraries do not own the copy. I think that the licensing scheme for libraries is not working. We should have a scheme similar to the print world where publishers issue a specific number of digital copies with unique serial numbers. Once the library

Our music faculty have concert recordings that they’d like to deposit in our institutional repository, which is publicly accessible. You are on the right track of it being a case-by-case question of looking at each work on the recital/concert. I am not a lawyer, but I spent many years as a music librarian and have examined several different institutions’ takes on how much risk they are willing to take on with their concert/recital recordings. There’s multiple layers to examine, and the level of risk varies as to how an institution justifies being able to make the recording to begin with and how widely

There’s been concern for some time about language attached to federal appropriations bills that would contradict the 2022 Nelson memo from OSTP and ban spending federal dollars on OSTP-mandated open access and open science. In the present draft, the ban was stripped away in the back rooms. Thus, it would appear that the bill, without the ban, will likely pass by March 8th as part of federal budget stop-gapping.

Here is the license agreement we use at DePaul when a vendor or filmmaker doesn't have their own agreement. Typically we use this for films we buy as perpetual titles but have used for some limited time length licenses. Our Office of General Counsel approved this for us to use. It's simple but covers the things we need it to and we made sure not to reference any potential use of materials that would already be permitted under fair use.

OASPA’s wayfinders series brings to life practical case-studies helping all organisations find ways to increase equity in open access (OA).
Our second wayfinders webinar focuses on those currently operating in a per-publication charge context. It is one thing for publishers that are set up, from the get go, to support OA without researcher-facing fees or per-unit invoices. However, the picture is complex for those currently using APCs

Dear all,
I wanted to share with you an important milestone as part of the Make Data Count initiative and our work toward enabling evaluation of data usage: the first release of the Data Citation Corpus <https://doi.org/10.60804/r14z-mw10>.
The lack of a centralized resource for citations to datasets has hindered the evaluation of how open data is being used. To address this gap, DataCite, supported by the Wellcome Trust, is working to develop the Data Citation Corpus, a resource that stores data citations from a diverse set of sources, and

I posted a link a couple of days ago to a story about citation cartels in universities in China and Saudi Arabia, where locals are working to pump up the citation counts of their colleagues. Now this preprint: you don't have to have complacent colleagues in cahoots with you if you can just go out on the open market and buy yourself some citations.

I agree. And beyond that, I suggest that the idea that science can be self-policing is on life support. We need paid reviewers, who write no papers, so that they are have unbiased incentives.

Paid reviewers, Thomas? Excellent idea.
But who are the "reviewers who write no papers themselves"? Emeriti? Not sure one can be unbiased even if s/he sees the work that goes against their own former writings.
In fact, your proposal reminds of the Paradox of the Barber "who shaves only those who don't shave themselves". Such a person does not exist after all.

Piling up citations is a way of building reputation and thus attracting readers and viewers in a benevolent frame of mind. I confess that (a) when I started reading this story, it seemed a little click-baity and I thought perhaps I should be suspicious but (b) when I saw that it was published in Science -- with all its prestige -- I decided that this was real and worth sharing.

The academic physics publishers also promise to put research integrity ahead of profit to combat the growing problem of fake scientific papers.

Interesting initiative.
Two quick questions. Firstly, does this signal a shift in behaviour? I assume that most scholarly publishers would say that they are already acting in this way. Will the three publishers be doing things differently now they have issued their statement?
Secondly, there is a commitment to ensuring that ‘our terms are reasonable’. Who defines ‘reasonable’?
